Happy Birthday, Hyaets!
In August, 2010, Hyaets will be celebrating its 5th birthday. For the big celebration, we are putting together a Hyaets timeline and scrapbook. We invite you to send your Hyaets stories, pictures, testimony, and reflections to be included in the scrapbook. Please send Hyaets gifts and scrapbook submissions to 2910 Parkway Ave; Charlotte, NC 28208 before August 1st. Thank you.
We celebrate the accomplishments of one of our own:
Da'Bria Spurgeon
Hyaets youth, Da'bria Spurgeon of Willson Middle was one of two to win the local 2010 Do the Write thing Essay context at an awards banquet April 26th. The contest is part of the national Campaign to Stop Violence, a coalition of businesses, community leaders and organizations that help to educate children about violence.
More than 2,000 students from 14 middle schools wrote about how youth violance and drug abuse has affected their lives and what they can do to help stop it. There were 28 finalists in the contest.Da'Bria's essay tells about her personal experiences with peer pressure and youth violence. She wrote about how peer pressure led her to disobey her parents and make choices that came with severe consequences at home and at school. Her story also explains that a teenager's living environment affects their behavior. "I have a voice at school and in my community," da'bria Said. I will try to make the neighborhoods I live in better and bigger for the next generation."

Have you thought about the summer yet? We have!
The Summer is one of Hyaets’ busiest seasons! We do all sorts of activities like: events with children and youth, host visiting mission teams, connect and rebuild relationships with neighbors, grow a prolific garden, and more. As you know, this summer will be more eventful than the ones in the past because Hyaets will be welcoming TWO NEW BABIES into the community. The Jarrell baby is due at the end of June and the Williams baby is due at the end of July! That said, we need all the help we can get in order to make this summer run smoothly.
In an attempt to organize the chaos, we have come up with a list of volunteer needs. Please take a moment and see what you can do to help!
Volunteer needs:
Spread the word! Help get the word out about Hyaets needs. Post it our list of needs on your church or work bulletin boards. Tell people about us. Share us with your friends on facebook.
Volunteer! We need the following types of volunteers:
- Lunch Sponsor or Donor: On M-F, Hyaets feeds an average of 15 participating children a lunch daily at noon. The menu for summer lunches has been set. If you would like to sponsor a meal, you may schedule your day to come to the Hyaets house, fix the food, serve food, eat with kids, and clean up afterwards. If you’d simply like to donate the food for the meal, you may do that as well. We ask that all lunch food is donated at least 24 hours before the scheduled meal. Kids’ lunch food is always brought to the Parkway house.
- Transportation Provider: The schedule of kids’ activities for the summer has been set. You may volunteer your vehicle and driver for a specific day or activity. When you call to volunteer, be sure to let us know how many passengers you can take and whether or not you’ll be staying for the activity, picking up, and/or dropping off. Please see the Transportation Needs Schedule or speak with Helms to volunteer to drive.
- Errand Runner: Beginning June 10th, you may call the Hyaets houses and speak to a Student Summer Missionary regarding your desire to help run errands. Please call at the beginning of the week to inquire about necessary errand running. Our Student Summer Missionaries will keep an updated list of needs. Also, you may find our Summer Grocery Shopping schedule on the Hyaets calendar.
- Supply Provider: Feel free to check our wish list or the following list to know what supplies we might need for the summer. The list may be added to in future Hyaets email announcements. Supplies: swimming goggles, sun screen, ice, recreation equipment, recreation equipment bag, sidewalk chalk, individually wrapped snacks, band aids, 10 ride CATS bus passes, water game supplies. Please call the Hyaets houses to arrange drop off of these supplies.
- Activity Leader: On gym, pool, and picnic in the park days, meet us at our location and lead the children in fun and recreational activities. Ideas of what to do include: games, races, competitions, motion songs, etc. See the list of dates and times on our Hyaets calendar. Contact Helms or our Student Summer Missionaries with your interest.
- Adult Ministry Volunteer: Contact Jason and Joanie to volunteer with the Adult Ministry. Activities may include: data entry, house to house visitation, answering the house door and phone, providing transportation to neighbors, making community meal fliers, food distribution, and more.
- Household helpers: Our houses often get extra dirty due to the extra feet running in and out. Stop by and take a minute to help us with the following chores: sweep, mop, water the garden, weed the garden, wash windows, wash dishes, take out the trash, walk the dogs, mow the yard, vacuum the rugs, dust the furniture, clean and fold pool towels and general laundry. Call ahead of time to schedule a time to help out.
- Supervisor On Duty: M-F, Hyaets provides a fun activity for the children in our neighborhood. Our Student Summer Missionaries are the primary leaders involved in planning and facilitating activities for these days, however an extra hand is always needed. Supervisors On Duty are asked to be present from 11:30am-4:00pm on their assigned day (unless otherwise listed on the Hyaets calendar). Supervisors are asked to participate in the activities, helping with discipline and relationship building, and lend a hand to the Student Summer Missionaries as they serve lunch and lead the children in activities.
Orientation: We’re going to have a couple of times between now and summer to orient new and returning volunteers to the inner workings of Hyaets. Time will be limited to 1 ½ hours and we will be sure to include refreshments. Volunteer Orientation dates and times will be announced in the March email announcements as well as online. Please stay tuned!
